Assassin's Apprentice

[Farseer Trilogy] [Realm of the Elderlings]
by Robin Hobb | 1995

Review

I enjoyed the first book of this series (and world).

I didn’t find the book dark per say, but I might call it gloomy. Not depressing though. It’s certainly not as upbeat as some other novels. Maybe comparable to A Song of Ice and Fire.

In particular, it was annoying that Regal seemingly got off scott free after all he did.

I appreciate that no one is perfect and all good in this world; it leaves you unsure what will happen next.

I also had some confusion around the Wit. Why was it so bad? I guess Burrich said you would turn into a beast. That isn’t really expanded on though. I hope we learn more.
